My Game Design and the games that influenced it

My game is going to be a 3D Collect-A-Thon platformer in the vein of New Super Lucky’s Tale (Playful Corp., 2019). Why that game? Because it’s a 3D Collect-A-Thon that is suitable for all ages (Fig. 01) and it’s my aim for my platformer to be for everybody.

The story of my game is going to be about a hero who is guilty of committing a crime and she is given community service. She is tasked to collect food for those that are hungry. My hero doesn’t see the point and does it begrudgingly.

The collectables in my game will be food. The more food you collect, the more people you feed. This idea was inspired by the Bugsnax collectable in the game Bugsnax (Young Horses, 2020). In Bugsnax, you have to capture 100 different species of Bugsnax (Fig. 02) and feed the inhabitants of Snaxburg (Bugsnax Home Page, 2020).

The responses, hugs and praise from the people my hero receives inspires her to keep finding food.

A challenge my hero can face is convincing the food banks and restaurants that she can be trusted to deliver the food to those who need it. They can send her on errands.

My hero will send out other people to find food that she can’t find herself. These playable characters will bring different playstyles to the game to keep the gameplay fresh like in Spyro 3: Year of the Dragon - Reignited (Activision, 2018) (Fig. 03).

(Fig. 04) My Screenshot (Game Mechanics and Game Genres, 2020)

The game mechanics will be, according to Adams and Dormans (2012, Pg. 9), Economy and Progression (Fig. 04). The Economy mechanic is the food collectable. Progression in the game is tied to this collectable. The more food you collect, the more levels you unlock.

This is my idea for the game I’ll be pitching in my Game Design class next week.
