Placed turrets to add challenge
Portal 2 is a puzzle platform game where players solve puzzles by placing portals and teleporting between them. In this custom co-op level I made, two players must work together to reach the other side of the level and destroy the turrets with portal placement and co-ordination.
A fellow student and I worked on two co-op levels. My role was to expand upon the glass separation mechanic that the fellow student implemented in her level. I expanded upon this by designing the placement of the turrets so that it would be difficult for one player to destroy them all on their own.
The laser and mirror cube box were placed where they were so that they would both be the first gameplay elements the player will see when they enter the test chamber. The reason why there were so many turrets guarding the button was so that it would encourage the two players to work together on defeating them. That goal defined what I wanted to achieve when designing this level in that it would be both fun to play together and be rewarding in terms of overcoming the overwhelming amount of turrets.
Overview
My tasks were to design the level in ways that it required two players in order to complete it. This was why the laser was implemented. It encouraged two players to work together and focus on defeating the turrets first before getting the cube onto the red button and finishing the level.
My work revolved around the placement of gameplay assets which were the raised floor, the glass wall, laser, the mirror cube box, the turrets and the button to open the door. The floor was raised so that when the laser destroys the turrets, it wouldn't go through the glass and hurt one of the players.
